Studying for the Medical Assistant Certification Test

In order to become certified to become a medical assistant, there is a state exam that needs to be taken and passed. This goes for any other medical position you are looking to get into. Before you can take this exam, a medical assisting training class needs to be taken. If you have taken the course and are ready to take the exam, here are some tips to help you prepare and pass it.

Review Material Learned

You should take notes during your course. Make sure you are detailed with your notes so that you understand what you are making note of. Review all materials that are going to be present on the test. There are often times practice tests that will help you with preparation. The topics that are covered are going to be specific.

Look in Publications

You can look in the library for journals, newspapers, and even magazines that talk about the field of medical assisting. These can be used as resources for the exam. You can also talk to your professor of your training course or find resources at the school where you studied.

Talk to Friends

If you know anyone that is a medical assistant, you can talk to them about things that are on the test. Ask them to help you study so you are studying the right materials. You can also find outlines of important topics from the AAMA. Try not to wait until the last minute to talk to people and study. Cramming only causes anxiety and increases your chance of failing as your tension and stress levels are increased.

Study, Study, Study

Just when you think you have studied enough, study some more. Chances are you will forget half of the things you studied the night before and therefore you should study as often as you can to ensure that you learn things. You can ask family or friends to test you so you are not simply memorizing material. After all, practice makes perfect and this old cliché even pertains to test taking.

Manage Your Time Wisely

To ensure that you cover each topic in its entirety, spend time each day on one topic. Rather than trying to cram everything into one day, dedicate a few hours a day to one topic. That way you can take your time learning materials and terminology. You may be tested on your knowledge of medical terminology. The CMA is going to test you on a variety of different things learned in your course.

When the day comes to take the CMA, make sure that you have gotten enough rest the night before and make sure you manage your time wisely. While it's important to spend some time thinking about your answer, try not to spend too much time. If you are having a hard time with a question, skip it and go back to it later. That way you can get through all of the questions and have adequate time to finish the test in its entirety.
